A better shortlist for your next payment partner

Compare providers against your business needs with a consistent set of questions, not unsupported rankings.

There is no single payment provider that is right for every business. A strong shortlist reflects your markets, business model, customer experience and operational capacity. Setting evaluation criteria before demonstrations makes comparisons more useful and reduces the influence of an impressive sales presentation.

Write down the non-negotiables

List required countries, currencies, payment methods and integration capabilities. Include business-category eligibility and any specific payout or reporting needs. Distinguish essential requirements from features you might use later. Describe your expected transaction patterns using realistic ranges rather than only projected growth. This gives providers the context to explain suitability and avoids spending time evaluating an arrangement that cannot support your core business.

Compare the whole arrangement

Use the same representative transaction mix when requesting pricing. Review all applicable fees, minimums, reserves, contract duration and termination provisions. Ask about dispute support, incident communication and operational escalation. Explore the dashboard with a finance or support colleague, not only the integration team. A lower advertised rate may not mean a lower total cost when transaction characteristics and additional charges are taken into account.

Validate before making the decision

Test successful payments, declines, refunds and interrupted authentication in a suitable environment. Request clarity on production onboarding and required documentation. Check export formats, integration maintenance and exit arrangements, including any constraints on saved-payment migration. Keep a comparison record showing how each option meets the original criteria. Where contract or compliance questions are material, obtain qualified advice before committing. A deliberate selection process protects flexibility as well as today's checkout.

Key takeaways

  • Set essential requirements before comparing providers.
  • Compare total costs using the same transaction assumptions.
  • Validate support, reporting and exit arrangements.
